Sunbathe, Swim, Unwind at These Beaches in Rotterdam
You might be wondering are there beaches in Rotterdam? Absolutely. Rotterdam and the surrounding area have several beautiful beaches. Maasvlakte Beach offers scenic views of the harbour, while Hook of Holland is known for its broad sandy beach and lively beach pavilions. Nesselande beach, closer to the city, has a boulevard with a nice selection of places to eat and drink. Whether you want to relax or get active, there is a beach to match every mood.
Hook of Holland
The metro in Hook of Holland runs all the way into the dunes, which alone makes it worth the trip. The beach here is wide and spacious, just like the surrounding dune landscape. It is perfect for sunbathing or taking a long walk along the shore. And if you enjoy feeling the wind in your hair, even a strong breeze still counts as beach weather.
Many of the beach pavilions are open all year round. In summer, you stretch out on a lounge bed with a cool drink in hand. In winter, you warm up near a heater or fire pit with a hot chocolate or mulled wine. Both have their charm.
Most visitor facilities are located near the Badweg and the Zeekant. This is where you will find the majority of beach pavilions and shops.

Iris van den BroekStrand Nesselande
Nesselande Beach is an ideal alternative to the busy coastal resorts during the summer months. On warm days, the Siciliëboulevard along the Zevenhuizerplas is reminiscent of southern Europe, but with a Dutch touch.
The Zevenhuizerplas offers plenty of options for water sports, including windsurfing, sailing, diving and rowing. Swimming areas and water sports zones are clearly separated, making it safe and comfortable for everyone. Along the Siciliëboulevard and Maltaplein, you will find a varied selection of restaurants, ice cream parlours, supermarkets and drugstores. Useful if you happen to forget your sunscreen. From Nesselande metro station, the beach is just a ten-minute walk.

Swimming in the Rijnhaven
On a warm day in Rotterdam, the Rijnhaven is a popular place to cool off. From the floating park, you can dive straight into the water and swim between the high-rise buildings of the city skyline. After your swim, relax on the grass and enjoy the sun.
The swimming area in the Rijnhaven has been open for two years and is usually accessible from 1 May to 1 October.
Maasvlaktestrand
Maasvlakte Beach is special because of its location in the heart of Rotterdam’s harbour. Combine your visit to Maasvlakte Beach with a visit to Portlantis, the interactive experience centre about the Port of Rotterdam.
The beach offers plenty of space for recreation. Enjoy the peace and expansive views while swimming, sunbathing or walking along the shore. Dogs are welcome on a leash. At the northernmost beach entrance, a 500-metre stretch is reserved for naturists. You can also go kitesurfing or fishing at the designated sports area. Cast your line and enjoy the sight of container ships passing by.
The new bathing beach is easy to reach by car and bicycle, and there are several free parking areas available.
Iris van den BroekBeach at Kralingse Plas
At the Kralingse Plas, you will find a small sandy beach where you can relax by the water. Surrounded by a forest of around 250 hectares, there is plenty of space to unwind. Sunbathe, picnic, take a walk or sit down at one of the nearby cafés and restaurants.
It’s also ideal for families as children can play at the shallow paddling pool and on various play structures. A small section of the beach is reserved for nudists, and public toilets are available in the Kralingse Bos.
Hester BlankestijnDe Esch Beach
Along the River Maas, you will find several quiet sandy spots. Although the river current is too strong for swimming, these small beaches offer a peaceful place to relax. Enjoy the sun, read a good book and watch ships glide past.
De Esch Beach is close to nature where you can wander through wild greenery. You might spot blackberries, wildflowers or birds along the way.
Insider tip: in spring and summer, you will find the city beach bar De Maaskantine nearby. Drop in for a drink or a bite to eat or combine your beach trip with one of De Maaskantine’s fun events, such as their outdoor film nights under the stars.
Iris van den BroekQuarantaine Area Beach
At the Quarantine Area on Heijplaat, a small and quiet beach lies along the River Maas. The location is known for its unique mix of history and nature. The area was developed in 1934 as a quarantine site for seafarers but was never used as such.
The beach offers beautiful views of river. Swimming is not safe due to the current and passing ships, but it is a nice place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The most fun and fastest way to reach Quarantine Beach? Take the water taxi. Hop on anywhere in the city centre and travel by this iconic Rotterdam taxi boat to stop 96.
