Small museums and exhibition spaces
In addition to its major institutions, Rotterdam is home to many small museums, exhibition spaces and independent art institutions. These museums in Rotterdam focus on contemporary makers, specific themes or changing exhibitions, often in more intimate and unexpected settings. From galleries with innovative exhibitions to museums dedicated to history, architecture or pop culture, these places invite you to explore Rotterdam’s creative side.
1. Belasting & Douane Museum
Housed in a stately townhouse in the Scheepvaartskwartier, the Belasting & Douane Museum takes you on a journey through the history of taxes in the Netherlands. The changing exhibitions also explore the work of customs officers, from smuggling objects to personal stories that bring the profession to life.
With games, experiments and treasure hunts, there is plenty to do for children as well. This museum is an engaging visit for all ages.

2. Brutus Art Space and Brutus Garden (Atelier Van Lieshout)
In the Merwe-Vierhavens area, also known as M4H, you will find Brutus Art Space. This gallery offers artists room to realise ideas that often do not fit within traditional museums. Think large-scale, raw, experimental or challenging works. A perfect match for the industrial character of the former harbour district.
Brutus presents changing exhibitions featuring emerging talent. The space was founded in 2008 by sculptor and designer Joep van Lieshout. Brutus Garden is the adjoining sculpture garden, where works by Atelier Van Lieshout are permanently on display.

3. Chabot Museum
On the edge of Museumpark stands a white listed villa from 1938, home to the Chabot Museum. The museum manages one of the most important collections of the Rotterdam painter and sculptor Henk Chabot.
Chabot is known for his depictions of farmers, gardeners and the Dutch landscape, as well as works from the war years showing refugees and people in hiding. Alongside his work, the museum presents changing exhibitions of international expressionism. The light, open spaces of the villa add an extra dimension to the exhibitions.
The building itself is an example of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement, alongside Huis Sonneveld, De Kuip stadium and the UNESCO-listed Van Nelle Factory, which can also be visited on guided tours organised through the Chabot Museum.

4. Dutch Pinball Museum
Relive childhood memories at the Dutch Pinball Museum. With more than 100 working pinball machines, there is plenty to explore. The collection ranges from early pinball-style games from before the Second World War to modern machines with themes such as The Beatles, Jurassic Park, Dolly Parton and James Bond.
The museum is housed in a former grain warehouse from 1825 in historic Delfshaven. Both the building and the neighbourhood are worth exploring in their own right.

5. Garage Rotterdam
Garage Rotterdam is located in a former Volkswagen garage in the Hoogkwartier. This 500-square-metre exhibition space hosts a new exhibition four times a year, featuring contemporary art by local and international artists.
In addition to exhibitions, Garage Rotterdam regularly organises lectures, talks and music events. During the culinary evening Natafelen, visitors can enjoy a four-course dinner at long tables set up inside the exhibition space.

6. Huis Sonneveld (part of the Nieuwe Instituut)
Huis Sonneveld is one of the best-preserved private homes in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen. The white villa was designed in the early 1930s by architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt, also known for the Van Nelle Factory.
Today, the house offers insight into how the Sonneveld family lived in the early 1930s. Visitors can explore the house freely with an audio tour, which shares stories about the family, the architecture and the interior design. For children, there is a special tour called Staying with Leonard, guided by the family’s grandson.
Huis Sonneveld is located next to Museumpark and is part of the Nieuwe Instituut. Combination tickets or individual entry tickets are available.

7. Mariniersmuseum
Located at the Wijnhaven, the Mariniersmuseum is one of the most striking museums in Rotterdam. The museum focuses on the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps. The permanent exhibition explains the work and missions of the marines in an interactive way, complemented by smaller temporary exhibitions. Children can also go on a mission themselves, completing team challenges based on marine skills.
The museum is housed in a historic building overlooking the River Maas and the Willems Bridge. In May 1940, marines defended the north bank of the Maas bridges here during the German invasion.

8. Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam
A giant skeleton of elephant Ramon, preserved animals with remarkable stories and fish in jars: you will find it all at the Natural History Museum Rotterdam. The museum highlights the importance of nature, biodiversity and a biodiverse city.
With both a permanent collection and changing exhibitions, the museum showcases the richness of the plant and animal world. It is located in Museumpark, directly opposite the Kunsthal.
Insider tip: every first Wednesday afternoon of the month, admission is free.

9. TENT
At its exhibition space near the Coolhaven, TENT gives Rotterdam-based artists a platform to present their work. The organisation aims to connect artists, audiences and the city.
Alongside changing contemporary exhibitions, TENT regularly hosts events. The institution also organises nomadic projects at different locations across the city, tailored to the stories artists want to tell. (art: Donald Schenkel, photo: Aad Hoogendoorn)

Atlantikwall-Museum
On the Noorderpier stands a gun bunker built in 1943, once part of the Atlantikwall during the Second World War. Today, it houses the Atlantikwall Museum.
iCoon Hoek van Holland
