De Doelen ICC: a monumental commitment to sustainability
Located in the city centre, where culture and commerce meet, De Doelen ICC is a striking monumental building and architectural icon. As one of the city’s leading venues for conferences, concerts and events, De Doelen is proving that historic buildings can set an example of climate-conscious innovation.
Vision for 2040: climate neutrality
De Doelen ICC has set itself the ambitious goal to be fully climate neutral by 2040. This long-term vision is more than a statement, it’s a roadmap that guides every decision, from daily operations to major renovations. The venue’s dedicated Green Team is leading this transformation, developing and implementing concrete actions that are monitored and refined every year.
Sustainability in action
Sustainability at De Doelen is not a side project, it’s embedded in every layer of the organisation. Here’s how the venue is turning its vision into reality:
- Green Key Gold Certified since 2011, De Doelen meets the highest international standards for sustainable tourism and business.
- The venue boasts a Blue-Green Roof spanning over 2,500 m², capable of storing 300,000 litres of rainwater and supporting biodiversity with five insect hotels.
- A Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system helps regulate the building’s temperature efficiently, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- All lighting has been upgraded to energy-efficient LED, significantly cutting electricity use.
Sustainable events
At De Doelen ICC sustainability is part of the event experience, whether it’s a global conference or a local cultural event. Events are organised according to clear environmental guidelines, with a focus on reducing waste, conserving energy, and promoting responsible mobility. This venue also works closely with sustainable caterers to minimise food waste and source local, seasonal ingredients.
Heritage and sustainability
As a listed national monument, De Doelen proves that heritage and sustainability can go hand in hand. In collaboration with the building’s owner, the venue is developing a roadmap to a climate-neutral building, ensuring that its historic character is preserved while embracing the future.
People, planet, progress
De Doelen’s sustainability strategy is rooted in a broader sense of corporate social responsibility. The venue is committed to:
- Being a good employer for all demographics.
- Offering inclusive and diverse programming that welcomes a wide audience.
- Reducing the CO₂ footprint of visitors, suppliers, and staff.
- Partnering with social organisations to make a positive impact on the community.
Leading by example
As the initiator of 7 Square Endeavour, a local sustainability initiative, De Doelen is making strides and also inspiring others to follow suit. By sharing knowledge and collaborating with partners across the city, the venue is helping to shape a greener, more resilient Rotterdam. De Doelen ICC is proof that sustainability and cultural excellence can go hand in hand.
