IENS Independent Index, the democratic and independent restaurant site of The Netherlands offers monthly fun and original restaurant tips in Rotterdam. This month: delicious on the water.
Four Seasons
‘A jewel with exceptionally good food that deserves to be discovered’. However, this doesn’t seem to really happen anytime soon since even though it’s situated in the heart of the city, the location is practically hidden. The cuisine is fundamentally Chinese, but elements from other Asian cuisine have been integrated. Chef Chau uses typical Western products such as dorade or sea lavender. This results in classic Peking duck or fried quail, but also dishes like cod with red curry sauce or dorade in a salt crust. ‘The pavillion has a quiet terrace right on the water, just a stone’s throw away from the Meent. It’s maybe not the most beautiful view, but it’s ideal for a summer night’s meal in the city.’ ‘ The charming wait staff and the good wines – many of which come from Austria – are real strengths of this dining establishment.’ Noordmolenwerf 171, Rotterdam

De Watertoren
It’s no surprise that De Watertoren is located in the former water tower on the DWL grounds. A good way to get there is by water taxi, which practically drops you at the front door. From the outside it’s beautiful, but ‘the prefab ceiling inside is a bit of a shame. However, the psychedelic bathrooms make up for it.’ ‘The decor has a bit of a holiday feel’ – good light with a lot of colour. ‘And then there are the tablecloths which are absolutely fantastic.’ The restaurant has a Mediterranean menu that is the same all year around. Favourites are the fish dish for two as a starter and the ‘white chocolate cake for dessert’. ‘Delicious and pure food for a good price.’ ‘This is one of Rotterdam’s best kept secrets.’

‘t Ouwe Bruggetje
‘At this restaurant you are really treated like a guest; and the people who work here radiate a feeling of warmth and love for their work.’ The wine menu deserves to be mentioned as it is filled with excellent wines they import themselves. The best advice here: ‘Don’t order from the menu, but let them surprise you.’ ‘Delicious dishes served in good portions.’ This is a ‘really fun restaurant in the summer when the terrace boat is docked on the quay’. Enjoy the view of one of the few really old places in Rotterdam. Voorhaven 6, Rotterdam
