A major exhibition in the Kunsthal, a stirring concert in De Doelen or the art gallery in Witte de Withstraat; wherever you turn, art and culture is everywhere in Rotterdam.
Rotterdam sets the tone Rotterdam’s leading concert halls are the perfect venue when it comes to visual and auditory delights. Classical music, jazz and world music are performed on the stage of De Doelen, for example during the renowned Gergiev Festival. Mega pop stars and bands have plenty of scope to stage their spectacular shows in Ahoy and De Kuip. The Rotterdamse Schouwburg not only offers contemporary drama, but also opera and dance. Performances by Scapino Ballet and Conny Janssen Danst are out of this world, whilst the new Luxor Theatre is home to the big musicals.
Rotterdam on the boards Rotterdam’s theatre and drama companies will both thrill and move you. Onafhankelijk Toneel puts on various plays and operas in its own theatre and Theater Hal 4 has contemporary theatre and dance for young people on its programme. De Evenaar provides entertainment for young and old. This theatre, whose keyword is cultural encounter, is located in the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam.
Rotterdam inspires In 2009 and 2010, four major cities in the Netherlands will be focusing on art and culture during Holland Art Cities. Ten top museums in Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam are presenting a spectacular show of art based on three themes: International influences, Young and Dutch Masters. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Kunsthal Rotterdam will take you on a cultural voyage of discovery, under the banner Rotterdam Art City. Together with other cultural institutions, Boijmans will present Brazil Contemporary, which covers contemporary art, architecture and visual culture from Brazil. The large international fashion exhibition The Art of Fashion will show how fashion and art influence each other. The exhibition Culture and Conflict (Cultuur en Conflict) presents contemporary art that makes a contribution towards coping with and reconciling international conflicts. In the end of 2009, the Wereldmuseum will re-open following major renovation work.
Rotterdam surprises There is no lack of smaller museums and unique galleries in Rotterdam either. The art route, from the Museumpark to the Maritime Museum in Leuvehaven, takes you past such museums as the Chabot Museum, and the Witte de Withstraat. In this bustling street you will also find exhibition space Tent. and Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art. In the Maritime Museum, you can find out all there is to know about the maritime history of the Netherlands and Rotterdam. Wandering further through the city, you will come across visual art everywhere: from murals and statues to the sculpture route on Westersingel.
