In Rotterdam Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Kunsthal Rotterdam are part of the main programme for Holland Art Cities. A side programme is offered by other Rotterdam museums, like the Netherlands Architecture Institute, the Dutch Photography Museum, the Maritime Museum, the World Arts Museum and the Chabot Museum. Themes Theme 1 - International influences Holland Art Cities starts at the end of 2008 with the theme ‘International Influences’. The Dutch have explored the world, and foreigners have come to our country from all corners of the globe. The Kunsthal Rotterdam, for example, spotlights one of the most renowned 20th-century sculptors, Alberto Giacometti, with a major retrospective. The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam presents 150 important works that demonstrate the significance of the scholar Erasmus in Europe. Theme 2 - Young: Modern and Contemporary Art and Design From September 2009 the theme ‘Young: Modern and Contemporary Art and Design’ shows a cross-section of the best that young artists and designers have to offer today. Rotterdam has given shape to this theme in a special way, starting off in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen with The Art of Fashion, a large international fashion exhibition about how fashion draws close to the visual arts in many ways. The Kunsthal Rotterdam pay a great deel of attention to the work of Edward Hopper (1882-1967) that is shown in the Netherlands for the first time after more than twenty years. The Kunsthal Rotterdam also brings together contemporary art and culture as a contribution to the reconciliation of international conflicts in Don't mention the War. Theme 3 - Dutch Masters From July 2010 to mid 2011, ‘Dutch Masters’ are in the spotlights, whether they are famous painters, such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer, or more contemporary artists. Organizations that offer a significant impulse to today’s Dutch Masters or are active from Holland in the rest of the world take part. The exhibition in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will honor Rotterdam-born artist Kees van Dongen and show Van Dongen’s early years, his breakthrough and later international success through a selection of eighty paintings.
