Rotterdam is world-renowned for its modern harbour, the largest in Europe. In the area where the harbour originated, the inner-city harbours are now situated, transformed into bustling areas. They form the new face of Rotterdam at the Maas.
Rotterdam sails A day in Rotterdam would not be complete without a trip on the water. Classic and modern ships and boats, with the most wonderful names, will take you almost anywhere. The Nehalennia, operated by the Rebus Shipping Company, offers excursions to the windmills at Kinderdijk, for instance. On the Pancake Boat, China Boat, Brunch Boat and Tapas Boat you can eat as much as you like of the delicious food, during a relaxing sail in the Maas. The rapid Maas Taxi takes you from A to B in no time and with Spido you can really explore the port of Rotterdam. You can even get some hands-on experience during a trip on sailing ship De Eendracht.
Rotterdam rewinds Historic Delfshaven is a small, picturesque harbour, where you can still almost taste Rotterdam’s illustrious past. Why not visit the historical museum De Dubbele Palmboom or the Pilgrims Church. Enjoy the peace and quiet or stroll along the streets of small shops and restaurants. Nearby they are building a replica of the eighteenth-century liner De Delft. Another such nostalgic spot is the Scheepvaartkwartier, with its Veerhaven, Wereldmuseum and the Westelijk Handelsterrein.
Rotterdam goes out The combination of water and entertainment comes together perfectly on party ship De Ameland, where you can embark for fantastic parties on the Maas. There is always something going on here during the summer. In the Oude Haven, it is fun any time of the year. There is a large and varied choice of pavement cafés, bars and restaurants, open until the early hours. If you can’t manage without the sea, the sunniest seaside resort in the Netherlands, Hoek van Holland, is fortunately close by.
Rotterdam is maritime During the World Port Days in September, it is teeming on and around the Maas and Erasmus Bridge. This is an opportunity for everyone to get to know the port of Rotterdam, the Royal Dutch Navy and other maritime heroes. All kinds of ships are open to the public and there are spectacular demonstrations, ending in a big firework display. Like to explore the maritime world on a smaller scale? Then visit the Maritime Museum or the Port Museum.
Rotterdam transforms On the Maas, in Lloydkwartier and on the Kop van Zuid you can find grand monuments rubbing shoulders comfortably with modern architecture. Hotel New York is located among the gigantic towers of Montevideo and the World Port Centre, whilst the former power station in Lloydkwartier has been transformed into a workshop and studio for the audiovisual sector. These are Rotterdam’s hotspots, the favourite haunt of the city’s creative and cultural community.
